Playtonic Games, the innovative studio behind the beloved Yooka-Laylee, has announced significant staff layoffs, a decision shared through their official social media channels. While the specific number of affected employees has not been disclosed, the company attributes this difficult choice to navigating through “a period of profound change in how video games are created and funded.” This hints at broader industry challenges that many developers are currently facing, a situation that often impacts the workforce directly.
According to a LinkedIn update from Playtonic’s brand manager, Anni Valkama, the layoffs affect various departments, including production, art, game design, narrative design, and UI/UX design. Playtonic currently lists approximately 50 employees on LinkedIn; however, as the studio has expanded into a game publisher and prepares for the release of Yooka-Replaylee, it’s reasonable to speculate that their actual team size may be larger, reflecting their growth and evolving ambitions within the gaming industry.
Despite the challenges that Playtonic faces in terms of funding and game sales, the practice of ramping up hiring for a new project, such as Yooka-Replaylee, only to subsequently lay off those new hires before the game’s launch is not uncommon in the industry. While we cannot ascertain if this is the case here without further details, it is a noteworthy practice that underscores the unpredictable nature of the gaming landscape.
The original Yooka-Laylee was marketed as a spiritual successor to the classic Banjo-Kazooie and similar character-driven action-platformers, a concept that resonated strongly with fans. This connection is particularly relevant, given that Playtonic was established by former developers from Rare, the legendary studio responsible for Banjo-Kazooie and more recent successes like Sea of Thieves. Many titles published under Playtonic’s “Playtonic Friends” label continue to evoke the charm of Rare’s legacy, whether it’s the adorable Lil Gator Game or the challenging platformer Demon Turf, both of which encapsulate a delightful gaming experience.
