Keri Hilson Discusses the Realities of Romance with Athletes

In the latest episode of Cam Newton’s podcast, released on Friday, April 18, Keri Hilson openly discussed her perspective on dating athletes. Drawing from her personal experiences, Hilson conveyed to Newton that many athletes often exhibit a lack of emotional maturity, which can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction among their partners. This crucial insight sheds light on the complexities of relationships with individuals who are frequently celebrated for their physical prowess yet may struggle with deeper emotional connections.

“I think that you guys have— relationally, you’re stunted because a lot of people have appeased and placated you, and so you’ve gotten your way with women, with teachers, with— sometimes pastors,” she shared, emphasizing the challenges faced.

Hilson elaborated further during the interview, explaining that the intense and demanding nature of the sports industry often hampers athletes’ abilities to forge meaningful connections with their partners. Due to their elevated status, many individuals in the sports world find that people are hesitant to challenge them, leading to superficial interactions. Consequently, the talented singer, known for her hit ‘Superhuman,’ highlighted that although athletes may possess charm and financial stability, their preoccupation with the game can significantly limit their capacity to nurture a thriving relationship.

“Women don’t challenge a certain side of you relationally. In my experience, that was apparent, that just stunted emotionally, like, learning things, we’re talking in 30s, that maybe someone at 21 would’ve known,” she remarked.

Keri Hilson Identifies Key Deficiencies in Athletes’ Relationship Skills

When Newton prompted Hilson to delve deeper into her thoughts, she identified crucial qualities often lacking in relationships with athletes, such as honesty, emotional expressiveness, and genuine maturity. “I’d agree with you,” he acknowledged. Hilson further informed him, “But it wasn’t your focus. You were paid to run the ball down the field. Your job had to take precedence over a lot of things. So, it’s not your fault at all really.”

“I think you said it in a nutshell, you haven’t learned how to love. That’s a talent, a tool that you haven’t needed. I couldn’t pinpoint one thing for you when you asked me what things. It’s really all of it as it pertains to love,” Hilson elaborated, emphasizing the importance of emotional growth.

Keri Hilson Goes Viral for Her Social Media Exchange with Ester Dean

Keri ignited a social media frenzy when she appeared on ‘The Breakfast Club’ and revealed intriguing details regarding the lyrics of 2009’s ‘Turnin’ Me On’ remix, which many believed contained veiled attacks on Beyoncé. In a surprising revelation, Hilson stated, “I didn’t write them. I was forced to sing them,” asserting that her record label coerced her into recording the remix despite her reservations.

While Keri did not directly name anyone involved, Ester Dean eventually stepped forward, admitting her contribution to the song’s writing and offering an apology. However, Hilson was not interested in the apology after all these years, responding sharply, “You chose to stay quiet for 16 years, but coming out now, when you felt a portion of the heat I’ve gotten for something you wrote? Nah.”
