The renowned rap artist Nicki Minaj has become the latest celebrity victim of a dangerous “swatting” call this week, as law enforcement officials descended on her home in the Los Angeles area late Wednesday night. They responded to a fabricated report suggesting there had been a shooting at her residence, prompting a significant police response.
According to sources within law enforcement, shortly after 7 PM on the evening of the incident, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department received an alarming call. The report claimed that an assault was occurring at a home located in Hidden Hills, which is the neighborhood where Nicki Minaj resides. This false alarm caused a swift and immediate response from the authorities.
Upon arrival, deputies rapidly assessed the situation at the scene, only to find that there were no individuals present at the home and no signs of any disturbance or issues in the area. This situation highlights the serious implications and dangers associated with swatting calls.
The Los Angeles Times has reported that the anonymous caller contacted the sheriff’s business line instead of dialing 911. They falsely claimed that a shooting had occurred involving a Black woman at Nicki’s address and stated that two individuals were still present at the scene. Following an investigation, this call was ultimately classified as a swatting incident, which involves making false reports to provoke a law enforcement response.
Nicki Minaj has unfortunately experienced similar swatting incidents in the past. Notably, in both August and July of 2023, L.A. County deputies were dispatched to her home under false pretenses. In these previous events, one caller falsely reported that someone had been shot at her residence, while another alarming report claimed that her child was being abused. These repeated incidents highlight the ongoing threat and seriousness of swatting.
The identity of the caller involved in the incident on Wednesday night remains unknown. This anonymity adds to the ongoing concern regarding the motivations behind swatting incidents, particularly when they target high-profile individuals.
This most recent incident follows a tragic case of swatting that occurred in Atlanta. In that situation, a 911 caller informed police that a naked woman was being assaulted at a residence associated with rapper Young Scooter. When officers arrived, he fled the scene, resulting in a severe injury where he tore a femoral artery while jumping a fence. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries, and no illegal activity was discovered at the location. The caller, who was later identified as a former reality TV contestant, was arrested and charged with making a false report to law enforcement.
Reports indicate that at the time of the incident, Nicki Minaj and her family were not even in the Los Angeles area, which raises further questions about the motives behind such swatting calls and the potential impact on the safety and privacy of celebrities.
