Megan Fox’s Character from Jennifer’s Body May Have Survived

In a captivating interview with GQ, Amanda Seyfried delved into her most memorable roles, particularly her standout performance in the cult classic Jennifer’s Body. This film, penned by Diablo Cody and directed by Karyn Kusama, may not have achieved instant success upon its release in 2009, but it has garnered a dedicated following over the years, sparking enthusiastic conversations about a potential sequel. The film’s blend of horror and dark comedy has captivated audiences, transforming it into a beloved staple of the genre.

During the interview, Seyfried expressed her profound affection for the film and its unique universe, highlighting its cultural significance.

“I can’t critique this movie. It’s a perfect movie. It’s got balls. Diablo Cody was outspoken, beautiful, smart, and funny. We channeled a particular angst in a very specific comedic way within the horror genre. The special effects were phenomenal,” she recalled with enthusiasm. “There were stunts, everything you could desire, and even girl-on-girl action.” Seyfried’s passion for the project underscores its impact on both her career and the film industry.

Despite its eventual acclaim, Jennifer’s Body was not marketed to the appropriate audience—namely, the angsty teen girls who would resonate with its themes. Seyfried acknowledges how this misalignment affected the film’s initial reception in 2009.

“If critics had any complaints, it was about the marketing. The marketing was poor; we all agree on that. Karyn is a fierce advocate for women in storytelling,” Seyfried stated. “She has a remarkable ability to enrich the relationships between women in film and television. Karyn is incredibly human and sensitive, and she genuinely cared about the story beneath it all. She understood the material and executed it beautifully, while the marketing team diminished it to merely a gory romp. I believe they undermined its potential, and Karyn and Diablo formed an extraordinary partnership. Megan and I also had incredible chemistry on screen.”

Fortunately, the film was revisited, exonerated from the criticisms it faced, and has since developed a thriving cult following. Jennifer’s Body deserves recognition as a key entry in the “puberty as a monster” genre, joining the ranks of classics like Ginger Snaps. The prospect of a sequel could serve as the ultimate redemption for this iconic film, a notion that Seyfried is genuinely excited about.

“I’m looking forward to the sequel,” she shared eagerly. “They’re working on it, and I’ve already given my thumbs up. Whenever they’re ready, I’m ready. I want to reprise my role as Needy. I absolutely love Needy. This character allowed me to embrace my nerdy side while Megan transformed into a literal demon. It was an incredible experience, and we all had so much fun. I want to celebrate this beloved film by participating in the sequel.”

Seyfried also speculated on Needy’s potential evolution. “I envision Needy in a position of power—not necessarily in a power suit, but in a meaningful role. Perhaps she could be managing a branch at Planned Parenthood or something equally empowering. She’s a badass.”

However, the question remains: how can a Jennifer’s Body sequel exist without Megan Fox’s character, Jennifer? After all, Needy delivered a fatal blow to her heart in the film’s climax. Seyfried playfully teased, “And I don’t know, where would Megan be now? Maybe she’s someone’s chief of staff. But technically, she’s kind of dead, right? But is she? I have my doubts.”

If Needy turns out to be an unreliable narrator, a twist reminiscent of Will Graham and Hannibal, it could add fascinating layers to their complex relationship. Exploring the unspoken tension between them as they navigate life beyond high school would be compelling. Disney should seize this opportunity and resurrect Jennifer as a haunting legend of Devil’s Kettle.
