Longer Videos and DM Requests Folder Added by Bluesky

The open-source Twitter alternative, Bluesky, has rolled out an exciting new app update that introduces several noteworthy features, including the ability to share longer videos, a fresh filter for chat requests, and expanded language translation capabilities. This update signals the platform’s commitment to enhancing user experience and engagement.

One of the most significant changes is the extension of the video upload limit, allowing users to share clips up to three minutes in duration. Previously, users were restricted to posting videos that were only one minute long, which limited content creativity and expression. Now, with this latest version of the app, users can enjoy three times that capacity, making it easier to share more comprehensive and engaging content.

As video content increasingly shapes the landscape of social media, Bluesky recognizes this trend by enhancing its video capabilities. Earlier this year, the platform introduced a dedicated video feed and added a video tab on user profiles, making it more convenient for users to discover and engage with video content. This logical update to allow longer video uploads aims to significantly boost user engagement and interaction on the platform.

Additionally, Bluesky has introduced a new “Chat Requests” folder, a feature designed to streamline user interactions. Messages from individuals who are not connected to you will now be directed to this folder, ensuring that your main messaging space remains uncluttered. Users will have the ability to accept or reject these messages, providing greater control over their communication experience.

This enhanced organization allows users to manage their conversations more efficiently, ultimately improving their overall experience on the platform.

Moreover, the update includes a profile mute option that enables users to mute posts from specific accounts directly from their feed. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who wish to minimize unwanted interactions or distractions on their profiles. Users can simply tap the three-dot menu and select “Mute account” to silence posts without the need for additional navigation.

Bluesky has experienced a remarkable 17-fold increase in user-submitted reports over the past year, reflecting its growing user base and activity levels. While this surge in engagement is positive, it also indicates that the platform must explore more robust control options to address potential issues and enhance user safety.

In addition to these exciting features, the platform has also launched three new community translations: Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, and Esperanto. These additions are part of Bluesky’s ongoing efforts to foster a more inclusive environment for users from diverse linguistic backgrounds, ultimately broadening its appeal across different communities.

While it remains uncertain whether Bluesky will emerge as a formidable competitor against major social media giants, it has undeniably built a solid user base, currently boasting approximately 30 million active users. According to the latest tracking data, this impressive growth over the past year suggests that the platform is steadily gaining traction in the competitive social media landscape.

These indicators are promising, revealing an expanding audience that is increasingly engaging with the app. However, with only 30 million users, Bluesky still has a considerable distance to cover compared to larger platforms like X with 500 million monthly active users and Threads with 320 million. The absence of network effects that benefit these larger apps raises questions about how Bluesky can attain the necessary momentum to truly compete.

It’s also important to note that the rate of growth for Bluesky appears to be slowing. After achieving a remarkable addition of 10 million users within just three months from September to November last year, it has taken an additional four months to gain another 10 million. This observation indicates a steady growth trajectory, yet it lacks the explosive momentum seen in other social platforms post reaching significant user milestones.

This trend may imply that interest in Bluesky is peaking, casting doubt on its potential to reach even 100 million users. Both X and Threads offer a broader range of features and are connected to users’ existing social networks, presenting a challenge for Bluesky to establish a unique selling proposition, apart from its decentralization.

Ultimately, many potential users may not prioritize decentralization as a decisive factor in their choice of social media platforms. While the concept is certainly appealing, and there are tangible benefits to moving away from billionaire-owned applications and safeguarding personal data, the average user tends to seek straightforward interactions and connections with friends and interests.

If Bluesky can successfully incorporate the essential elements that draw users to social media—such as connectivity and engaging features—its chances of becoming a viable, scalable option may improve significantly. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the platform will evolve.

While Bluesky is undoubtedly an intriguing project with a noteworthy 30 million users, major challenges lie ahead. Unless unexpected controversies arise that provoke significant backlash against larger platforms, achieving the next level of growth could prove difficult for Bluesky.
