The narrative centers on the newly crowned queen as she confronts the chaotic state of the realm she has fought tirelessly to reclaim. This level of disorder is something Rhaenyra had never anticipated. In a recent interview, Emma D’Arcy shared insights into Rhaenyra’s mindset as she comes to terms with the formidable challenges ahead.
Throughout season three, the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms has faced an array of troubling issues. She has suffered the loss of another son and executed her first victim before a scrutinizing audience. The previous king, Aegon, has gone missing, along with his brother, Aemond, who possesses a dangerously loyal dragon. the rise of Ormund Hightower as a significant power player adds to her woes.
Rhaenyra had anticipated that the Dance of the Dragons would entail intricate plots, naval battles, and fiery confrontations. she never imagined that the crown’s treasury would be empty, leaving no funds for her grand coronation or even basic necessities. To make matters worse, the castle is infested with rats.
“What I find intriguing is that Rhaenyra is stepping into her role as a monarch while simultaneously returning to her family home,” D’Arcy explained to Variety. “This scenario emphasizes that even in her unique circumstances, she is not immune to the emotional weight of revisiting her childhood home. It reflects a captivating aspect of the show, highlighting the deep intertwining of personal and political challenges.”
As the third episode unfolds, the queen observes the Red Keep, filled with memories and the weight of her father’s presence. This specter becomes an increasingly heavy burden as she grapples with the responsibilities that accompany her position on the Iron Throne.
“For Rhaenyra, there are various interpretations of her reign,” D’Arcy elaborated. “One vision aligns with her father’s approach, characterized by moderation and a pursuit of peace. The pressure intensifies by the fact that she must sleep in her late father’s bed, or struggle to do so, as the case may be. I found this dynamic compelling. Amidst the broader struggle for legitimacy, we witness a person on their first day, akin to a new CEO examining the company’s financial statements. I appreciate the pragmatism of that detail that [Sara] Hess included.”
Rhaenyra’s most significant victory in an episode aptly named “Rhaenyra Triumphant” occurs when she gathers a group of nobles and wealthy merchants suspected of hoarding supplies during the food shortages in King’s Landing, serving them roasted rat. D’Arcy notes that this act transcends mere public shaming of the greedy.
“Due to the court’s financial constraints, Rhaenyra’s council must navigate a crucial optics game,” they stated. “I would categorize the dinner as a calculated publicity stunt, and a clever one, at that.”
