The male suspect entered the Walmart shortly before 5 p.m., where he used a knife to stab the victims, according to a statement from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office on social media. The ages of the victims have not been disclosed immediately. A sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene within minutes and successfully apprehended the assailant, preventing further harm.

Sheriff Michael Shea confirmed that the weapon used in the attack appeared to be a folding-style knife. Although the suspect is believed to be a resident of Michigan, further details about his identity have not been released. Michigan State Police confirmed on Saturday that the suspect is currently in custody and will face legal consequences.

According to Munson Healthcare, the region’s largest hospital located in northern Michigan, they are treating 11 victims of the stabbing incident. Spokesperson Megan Brown reported that all individuals being treated are stabbing victims, with six in critical condition and five in serious condition as of late Saturday evening. Authorities are expected to provide updates on the victims’ conditions early Sunday morning.

Eyewitness Accounts Reveal the Chaos in the Parking Lot

A witness named Steven Carter was loading his truck in the Walmart parking lot when he witnessed a man brutally cut a woman’s throat with a knife. Approximately five minutes later, the assailant was surrounded by a group of shoppers in the parking lot, including an individual armed with a gun. This group of five to six people repeatedly shouted at the suspect, urging him to “Drop the knife.” In a concerning response, the suspect reportedly exclaimed: “I don’t care, I don’t care.” He attempted to retreat from the crowd until someone tackled him, effectively subduing him.

“Initially, I was in disbelief. I thought it might be a terror attack,” Carter, who delivers customer orders from Walmart, recounted. “Then came the fear, disbelief, and shock. It all happened so quickly. By the time the police arrived, he was already on the ground, subdued.”

Tiffany DeFell, another witness, shared her experience of the terrifying ordeal. She was in the store’s parking lot when the chaos erupted around her. The 36-year-old was shopping in Traverse City and resides about 25 miles away in Honor, Michigan.

“It was incredibly frightening. My sister and I were just panicking,” DeFell said. “This is something you’d expect to see in a movie, not in real life where you live.”

Walmart and FBI Respond to the Stabbing Incident

In a public statement, Walmart pledged to cooperate fully with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation into this shocking incident.

“Violence of this nature is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we are grateful for the swift response from first responders,” the statement emphasized.

Additionally, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino took to social media, confirming that the bureau was actively responding to the situation to provide any necessary support to local authorities.
