Trump’s Victory: A Future for TikTok in the US?

The question on many minds is whether Donald Trump’s anticipated return to the White House will result in the revocation of the TikTok sell-off bill, allowing TikTok to continue its operations in the U.S. without interruption.

During his campaign, Trump made headlines by promising to “save TikTok” if he regained power, emphasizing his popularity on the platform to appeal to younger voters. This strategy may have contributed to his electoral success, but he now faces significant challenges if he intends to fulfill his commitment to keep TikTok viable in the U.S. market.

It’s important to clarify that the existing TikTok sell-off bill does not outright ban the app from operating in America. Instead, it requires TikTok to transition to U.S. ownership if it wants to remain accessible to American users. The Chinese government has expressed strong opposition to this sell-off requirement, and any enforced transition could lead to TikTok’s removal from the U.S. market, even though it technically would not be classified as a ban.

Trump has strategically leveraged the TikTok sell-off initiative as a tool to garner votes. The real test will be whether he can successfully intervene to halt the sale bill, which has already received Senate approval.

As President, Trump possesses the authority to issue an executive order that could override the Senate’s decision, although he would not be able to alter the approved bill itself. This move would significantly challenge the Senate majority’s authority, raising questions about whether he would choose to take such a drastic step to fulfill his promise to TikTok’s user base.

Trump’s electoral success would likely be a welcome development for TikTok’s management, who are actively pursuing costly legal actions against the U.S. government to contest the sell-off bill. With this political shift, TikTok’s prospects of remaining operational in the U.S., a crucial market for its growth, appear increasingly favorable, but the situation remains fluid.

It’s noteworthy to remember that Trump initially proposed a ban on TikTok back in 2020, though his motivations then differed significantly from today’s cybersecurity concerns.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, for which Trump blamed China, he threatened to ban TikTok as a punitive measure against the Chinese government for the virus outbreak. This illustrates that his initial opposition stemmed more from geopolitical tensions rather than legitimate worries about data privacy or surveillance.

Trump’s perspective seems to have evolved, as he now leverages TikTok to connect with younger audiences, which has positively shifted his perception of the platform.

Ultimately, the true extent of Trump’s views on TikTok remains unclear, particularly regarding whether top cybersecurity experts can influence his stance as they did with the Senate.

There is a possibility that as Trump engages in handover briefings, he may be persuaded to uphold the TikTok ban, but this scenario also opens a new avenue for TikTok’s leadership and lobbyists to re-advocate their case to keep the app available in the United States.

While Trump’s official return to office is still on the horizon, the outlook for TikTok has suddenly become significantly brighter, creating new opportunities for the platform’s future in the U.S. market.
