OpenAI’s highly anticipated ChatGPT Search engine has finally launched, transforming the way users access information online.
On Thursday, the company unveiled ChatGPT Search, promoting it as a powerful feature designed to “get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources.” While initially speculated to be a standalone search engine, ChatGPT Search is seamlessly integrated into the existing ChatGPT interface. Users can initiate real-time searches by clicking the web search icon or simply inputting a query, allowing ChatGPT to determine if web search is necessary for the latest results.

The launch of ChatGPT Search strategically positions OpenAI in the competitive landscape dominated by Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, both of which have long been integrated into their respective search functionalities. Many users are shifting their preference towards ChatGPT due to the increasing clutter of advertisements and low-quality, spammy content that often characterizes traditional search engines like Google. Previously, the knowledge cutoff for ChatGPT’s newer models was October 2023, but with the introduction of real-time search capabilities, ChatGPT is now able to provide users with up-to-date information from various media partnerships covering topics such as weather, financial stocks, sports updates, breaking news, and maps.

When utilizing ChatGPT Search, users will receive conversational responses that maintain the platform’s signature style. Additionally, a button will direct them to a curated list of sources. Upon selecting a source, users will encounter a familiar search engine interface, complete with headlines and direct links to each relevant story, thereby enhancing the overall user experience.

Currently, ChatGPT Search is accessible to users of ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Team, and SearchGPT pilot testers. OpenAI has announced that the feature will soon roll out to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users over the coming weeks. Furthermore, there are plans in place to extend ChatGPT Search capabilities to Advanced Voice Mode and free users in the near future, widening accessibility and enhancing user engagement.
