Differences Beyond a Screen: Understanding the Nuances

Google’s newest fitness tracker resembles a Fitbit Air with a display, yet these two devices are more distinct than they appear at first glance.

Google has reignited its focus on fitness trackers. The Pixel Watch has seen numerous updates since its debut in 2022, and the release of the kid-friendly Fitbit Ace LTE in 2024 suggested that the company was ready to expand its wearable range. Many might have assumed that Google was stepping back from affordable options under the Fitbit brand. that perception changed in May with the launch of the $99 Fitbit Air, a budget-friendly competitor to Whoop, albeit without a display. The landscape shifted again in October with the unveiling of the $179 Fitbit Edge, positioned as an intermediate option between the most economical tracker and the Pixel Watch 5. Both devices introduce AI-driven features that are not available on older Fitbit models, providing value without the hefty price tag or the need to be tied to the Android ecosystem.

To maximize their potential, users must subscribe to Google Health Premium. the Edge and the Air emerge as appealing choices for those who prefer not to invest hundreds in a smartwatch. It’s essential to note that while they share some AI capabilities, they are not entirely interchangeable. The Fitbit Edge boasts a display and other nuanced features that may make it the preferred choice depending on user needs.

What Sets the Fitbit Edge Apart from the Fitbit Air Beyond Its Display?

Although both devices are designed to be worn on the wrist, the Edge and Air exhibit notable differences in their design and functionality. The majority of interactions with the Air occur through the Google Health app, where users can monitor their data and customize settings. The Air, which measures 1.37 x 0.66 x 0.32 inches without its band, requires physical interaction only for charging or changing bands. In contrast, the Edge encourages more user engagement, featuring a 1.34-inch oval-shaped AMOLED touchscreen and a new mechanical side button. The Edge is also larger at 1.54 x 1.01 x 0.46 inches, making it more noticeable, especially when the always-on display feature is activated.

Beyond these initial design distinctions, the two wearables are equipped with different sensor technologies. Both models include optical heart rate sensors; however, only the Edge is outfitted with electrical sensors necessary for performing ECG readings. the Edge features an altimeter for tracking elevation and an ambient light sensor to adjust the screen brightness accordingly.

Google claims that both the Edge and the Air are designed to deliver up to seven days of battery life, although this varies with the Edge’s display settings. The Edge can achieve seven days of battery life if the always-on mode is disabled. With the always-on feature activated, it is rated for approximately two days. To compensate for this, the Edge can fully charge in 90 minutes, and a quick 15-minute charge provides about a day of battery life.

While battery life may present a challenge for the Edge, both devices share IP68 ratings for water and dust resistance, with a maximum protection level of up to 5ATM.

How Does the Fitbit Edge Outperform the Fitbit Air in Functionality and Tracking?

When Google introduced the Edge, it highlighted the inclusion of Health Guardian features from the Pixel Watch 5, which monitor heart health and insulin trends. These features are also accessible on both the Edge and the Air. Since these capabilities primarily rely on Google’s extensive data collection rather than specific sensors, it is likely that additional AI features will be introduced in the future.

The specific functionalities of each wearable showcase significant differences. The Edge and the Air both provide features such as activity tracking, daily readiness scores, cardio load insights, step counting, continuous heart rate monitoring, irregular heart rhythm alerts, sleep analysis, and a resilience score that gauges stress levels. The additional sensors and display on the Edge add functionalities, including ECG readings, the ability to count floors climbed, and live workout metrics displayed directly on the screen.

Thanks to its display and the lightweight Fitbit OS, the Edge can present more health data directly on the device, receive smartphone notifications, and even run a simplified version of Google Maps. The Air, in contrast, lacks these capabilities due to the absence of a screen, which may or may not align with user preferences regarding wearable technology.

One of the appealing aspects of the Fitbit Air is its understated design—it’s primarily sensors paired with a companion app for data review. Conversely, the Fitbit Edge stands out more prominently. While it doesn’t function as a mini-smartphone like the Pixel Watch, its visibility may be a consideration for users who prefer a less conspicuous device.
