Measles is on the rise in the United States, prompting New York to take urgent measures to combat the outbreak.
On Monday, Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency in response to the increasing number of measles cases throughout the state. More than 100 cases have been reported in New York this year, alongside over 1,000 cases in neighboring Pennsylvania. This emergency order enables pharmacists and other healthcare authorities to administer measles vaccinations.
“After reviewing the latest data on measles cases in New York State, I am declaring a State Disaster Emergency to strengthen our ongoing efforts to confront this disease,” Hochul stated in her announcement. “No one should suffer serious illness or die from a vaccine-preventable disease.”
Understanding the Measles Resurgence
As of October 1st, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports nearly 3,900 cases of measles across 47 states and jurisdictions in the U.S. Approximately 95% of these cases have occurred among unvaccinated individuals. This year’s figures are alarmingly higher than 2025, which had already recorded the highest number of measles cases in three decades.
The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective at preventing measles. due to the disease’s extreme contagiousness, a vaccination rate of at least 95% is necessary to maintain herd immunity. This high rate ensures that the virus does not spread easily among unvaccinated individuals, including children who are too young to be vaccinated.
This year, most measles cases in the U.S. stem from ongoing local outbreaks, with 42 separate outbreaks documented in 2026 alone. In New York, there have been a total of 108 measles cases reported this year. The majority of these cases (92) have occurred since July 15th, primarily affecting under-immunized, rural communities across 18 counties, as per state health officials.
Local health departments have already distributed over 1,000 doses of the MMR vaccine in these rural areas. Governor Hochul’s order will further empower paramedics, pharmacists, advanced EMS providers, certified midwives, and other healthcare professionals to administer MMR vaccinations. it will enable nurses to order measles testing.
“These emergency measures will safeguard New Yorkers and assist our community partners as they work diligently to address the spread of this disease.”
How Does New York’s Measles Situation Compare Nationally?
While New York is facing its challenges, it is not the hardest-hit state by measles this year. On the same day, Pennsylvania health officials announced that the state has surpassed 1,000 confirmed cases, marking the largest outbreak the state has experienced in over 30 years. At least five measles-associated fatalities have been reported in Pennsylvania, although the CDC has officially recognized only two cases so far.
Following two consecutive years of significant measles outbreaks across the country, it is almost certain that the U.S. will soon lose its measles-free status—over 25 years after the disease was declared eliminated in the region. Currently, it remains uncertain how long it will take to regain that status.
