President Trump Announces Plans for New AI Regulatory Agency and Leadership Role
While the tech industry is advocating for a slowdown in artificial intelligence advancements, President Donald Trump is moving forward with the establishment of an “AI Force.” He announced plans to appoint a “czar” to lead this newly formed agency. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump indicated that he would reveal his selection for this leadership role “in the near future.” Although specific details about the agency’s functions remain unclear, Trump has likened this initiative to the establishment of the Space Force.
In his post, Trump emphasized, “We will not in any way hinder or stifle the growth of this incredible industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!” His remarks reflect a commitment to fostering innovation in artificial intelligence.
To announcing the creation of the AI Force, Trump initiated a poll to redefine the term “artificial intelligence” into a more sophisticated and fitting label. Suggestions include terms like “extreme intelligence” or “supreme intelligence.”
This announcement stands in stark contrast to recent calls from AI leaders for a more cautious approach to AI development. Just a week prior, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, shared a comprehensive proposal urging a reduction in the pace of AI advancements. Following this, executives from rival AI companies, including OpenAI and xAI, expressed their support for Amodei’s initiative. Trump, however, argued that limiting AI growth in the United States would provide an opportunity for China to gain a competitive edge. He is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart next week, with AI expected to be a significant topic of discussion.
