Although the Full Moon has come and gone, the Moon continues to illuminate the night sky. Here’s what you can observe on its surface as it transitions into the next phase.
What Moon Phase Are We Experiencing Today?
As of Thursday, July 30, NASA’s Daily Moon Guide informs us that the Moon is in the Waning Gibbous phase, showcasing 100% of its surface for observation.
Even without special equipment, you should be able to see features such as Mare Tranquillitatis, Copernicus Crater, and Tycho Crater tonight. Using binoculars will enhance your view, allowing you to spot Gassendi Crater, Mare Frigoris, and Clavius Crater. For the best experience, a telescope will reveal all these features plus the landing sites of Apollo 15 and 17, as well as the Caucasus Mountains.

The upcoming Full Moon is scheduled for August 28.
What Are the Different Phases of the Moon?
NASA explains that the Moon undergoes a complete cycle of eight distinct phases approximately every 29.5 days. As it orbits Earth, the angle between the Sun, Earth, and Moon changes constantly. This variation results in different portions of the Moon’s illuminated side being visible, creating the well-known sequence from a thin crescent to a half Moon, progressing to a Full Moon, before the cycle begins anew.
The eight phases are as follows:

New Moon – During this phase, the Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun, making the side facing us completely dark (invisible).
Waxing Crescent – A small illuminated sliver appears on the right side (in the Northern Hemisphere).
First Quarter – Half of the Moon is lit on the right side, resembling a half-Moon.
Waxing Gibbous – More than half of the Moon is illuminated, but it has not yet reached full brightness.
Full Moon – The entire face of the Moon is bright and fully visible.
Waning Gibbous – The Moon begins to lose light on the right side (in the Northern Hemisphere).
Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) – Another half-Moon phase occurs, but now the left side is illuminated.
Waning Crescent – A slender sliver of light remains on the left side before the Moon becomes dark again.
