The Rockstar Game Workers Union represents employees across the developer’s UK locations.
Employees at Rockstar Games have officially established the Rockstar Game Workers Union, marking a historic moment as the first labor union within the Grand Theft Auto developer. As detailed in an explanatory video accompanying the announcement, this new union encompasses workers from Rockstar’s offices located in Edinburgh, London, Leeds, Lincoln, and Dundee, thus uniting all UK-based employees.
This union operates as a branch of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB). Its members are prioritizing critical issues such as “pay transparency, flexible working conditions, and the elimination of crunch.” The formation of the union is particularly timely as it addresses a pressing concern: the abrupt termination of 31 union members in October 2026. The IWGB labeled this incident as “the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry.” Conversely, Rockstar has asserted that the dismissals were due to “gross misconduct” related to the unauthorized sharing of confidential information. Rockstar claims that it was purely coincidental that all the terminated employees were members of a union organizing Discord channel.
Following the firings, protests erupted outside multiple Rockstar studios, prompting the IWGB to file a legal claim against the developer for what it viewed as the unjust dismissal of its workers. In January 2026, a UK employment tribunal denied interim pay to the dismissed employees, but the case is still pending resolution in court. One of the motivations for the public announcement of the Rockstar Game Workers Union is to generate funds for their legal defense.
The timing of the union’s announcement is strategic, as all eyes are currently focused on Rockstar Games and its parent company 2K due to the eagerly awaited release of Grand Theft Auto VI in November. If the game’s release proceeds as scheduled, the spotlight will also shine on the efforts of the Rockstar Game Workers Union.
