On the eve of Mother’s Day, a tragic funeral took place in Louisiana for eight innocent children who lost their lives in a devastating mass shooting. This heart-wrenching ceremony occurred on Saturday, May 9, just 20 days after Shamar Elkins perpetrated the attack on April 19, alongside his estranged wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, and his alleged girlfriend, Christina Snow. Emotional images from the funeral service have since gone viral, capturing the sorrow and loss felt by many. Among the deceased, seven children were the offspring of Pugh and Snow, while the eighth child was Pugh’s nephew.

What Led to the Tragic Loss of These Children?

Shamar Elkins utilized an assault-style weapon during this horrific event, despite having a felony firearms conviction dating back to 2019. His wife, Shaneiqua, was in the process of filing for divorce at the time of the shooting. The violence unfolded across two residences in a neighborhood in Shreveport, Louisiana. Officials disclosed that the eight children succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted within Shaneiqua’s home, where Elkins had allegedly kidnapped his three sons from Christina’s residence and transported them to his wife’s home just a couple of streets away, where four daughters resided.

In a horrifying turn of events, Elkins shot and killed his seven children as well as his wife’s nephew. Reports indicate that several of the children were asleep when the tragedy struck, while others attempted to flee through the back door. One child was tragically found lifeless on the roof, while another escaped the gunfire by jumping off the roof, sustaining injuries in the process.

Elkins’ life came to an end following a police chase; it remains unclear whether he was shot by officers or if he took his own life. Currently, investigations are ongoing, and this incident stands as the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years.

Heartfelt Funeral Service Commemorates the Eight Lost Children

The children who tragically lost their lives include: 11-year-old Sariahh Snow, 6-year-old Khedarrion Snow, 5-year-old Braylon Snow, 7-year-old Layla Pugh, 6-year-old Kayla Pugh, 5-year-old Shayla Elkins, 3-year-old Jayla Elkins, and 10-year-old nephew Mar’Kaydon Pugh.

The funeral service was held during the Mother’s Day weekend at Summer Grove Baptist Church in Louisiana. The ceremony commenced with a somber procession where mourners slowly passed by eight white caskets, each adorned with large photographs of the children, a poignant reminder of their short lives.

Gold crowns and elegant bouquets of white flowers adorned the tops of the closed caskets, symbolizing the innocence and beauty of the children. A choir performed behind the altar, accompanied by individual singers, creating a moving atmosphere throughout the service.

“Regardless of how you may be feeling today, we must remember that God is still good,” remarked Bishop Bernard Kimble, senior pastor of the Mount Olive Baptist Church, during his opening remarks.

The funeral program included heartfelt tributes dedicated to each child. Many of the children were lovingly nicknamed, with Jayla Elkins affectionately known as “Jaybae,” Kayla Pugh as “K-Mae,” and Mar’Kaydon Pugh as “K-Bug.” The program highlighted that Khedarrion Snow had “a sweet and loving heart,” and although his time on earth was brief, his spirit was immensely impactful. Layla Pugh was described as “bright, intelligent, bold, and filled with love,” who enjoyed making TikTok videos alongside her siblings and cousins.

Louisiana Leaders Share Their Condolences at the Joint Funeral

During the poignant service, several speakers took the stage, including Shreveport Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor, who acknowledged that “there are no words sufficient to ease this pain.” Additionally, Councilman James Green encouraged attendees to collectively “remove our funeral faces” as this gathering was a celebration of the children’s lives. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux also shared heartfelt condolences on behalf of the city.

“May we honor them by carrying forward the gentleness, joy, and love they so freely shared,” stated Arceneaux.

Also present was former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords, who has herself experienced a tragic shooting that cut short her political career in 2011.

After the service, buses were provided to transport mourners to the graveside burial. At the conclusion of the church service, Bishop Kimble led a prayer for healing and the journey ahead.

“Guide us as we move from this spot,” he implored. “For we understand that grief is a temporary state. If we place our trust in your favor, you will lead us through this darkness.”

In a demonstration of solidarity, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry mandated that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff at the Capitol and other state government buildings for the upcoming week. His message resonated deeply, stating that the victims were “the light of their homes and the heart of their classrooms.”

The message continued, “These children were full of promise, finding joy in life’s simplest pleasures, such as dancing, playing outside, and sharing laughter with family and friends. Their futures were bright and held great promise. We must honor their memory by standing united against such senseless violence.”
