Gunfire Strikes Downtown Chicago, Leaving Teens Among Victims

Late Friday Nov. 21, what should have been a festive evening in downtown Chicago turned deadly. Police responded to two separate shootings just blocks apart, leaving a 14-year-old boy dead and eight others injured, including teens aged 13 to 17. The first incident near the Chicago Theater on North State Street saw seven victims. While less than an hour later, a 14-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man were shot on South Dearborn Street. Additionally, the teen was pronounced dead and the older victim remains in serious condition.

Christmas Celebration Leads To Violence, Mayor Speaks Out

The shootings occurred on a busy night in the Loop. The night drew thousands of people for Chicago’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Millennium Park. Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the violence Saturday morning, calling it “emotional whiplash” for residents who had gathered to celebrate. He condemned the so-called “unsanctioned after-gatherings” and urged adults to accompany young people at large events, while warning that such incidents set the city back and evoke fear.

“I recognize this feels like emotional whiplash after this incredible celebration last night, where thousands of people gathered Chicagoans who were enjoying our tree lighting ceremony, thousands of Chicagoans came to express their love for our city…” Johnson claimed.

No Arrests Yet As City Ramps Up Security For Holidays

Even with 700 additional officers and violence intervention workers on duty, gunmen sparked chaos, and police recovered five firearms following the shootings. Authorities have yet to make any arrests, and Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $10,000 for tips leading to an arrest. Police continue to investigate the incidents, and Chicago plans to deploy 300 more officers for the upcoming Magnificent Mile Lights Festival to prevent further violence.
