YouTube’s trying out another way to encourage live-stream donations, with expanded “gift goals,” which will enable creators to incentivize donations by offering a reward at a certain donation threshold.
As explained by YouTube:
“We’re experimenting with gift goals, a new feature that expands the goals feature to vertical live streams. Creators in the experiment will be able to set a target gift amount and pick a timeframe to achieve the goal before sharing it with their viewers. With gift goals creators get a new way to engage with their audience and build community.”
YouTube launched goals for Super Chat last year, which enables streamers to set a goal, and reward, for engagement in the app.

And now, it’s expanding that to all live-stream creators, providing another means to spark engagement, by gamifying the process.
Which is obviously an approach that’s working for YouTube.
It’s also currently testing an engagement leaderboard for live-streams, which ranks viewers based on their engagement, while it’s also in the process of rolling out its “Jewels” live donation option, which provides another means to give money to your favorite creators.
The various options incentivize competitive donations, which could be a good way to get more creators more money, by prompting the audience to make donations, and beat out the competition to show that they’re the biggest fan.
Either way, it’s another interesting addition for live streamers in the app, which could help them get more money for their content efforts.
YouTube says that it’s currently experimenting with gift goals on vertical live streams on mobile devices for creators in the U.S., with further expansion to come at a later date.
