With the exciting internal transformations anticipated for our devices with iOS 26, there’s a growing buzz around how Apple has innovatively redesigned its latest smartphones: the iPhone 17 series. Although we still have to wait a little over a month for the official unveiling — assuming Apple adheres to its traditional release timeline — we can indulge in some speculation regarding the aesthetics and features of these new devices. True to the pattern of previous unreleased iPhone models, a steady stream of rumors and leaks has surfaced concerning the hardware elements ahead of the official launch announcement. Here’s what we expect and what we can reasonably deduce will come from Cupertino this September.
What are the most recent rumors and reports about the iPhone 17?
Interestingly, the most recent buzz does not focus on the specific features of the iPhone 17 itself but rather pertains to when Apple will officially showcase the new devices. An article from MacRumors brought attention to a story initially published by iphone-ticker.de, suggesting that the Apple iPhone 17 launch event could potentially occur on Tuesday, September 9, based on insights obtained from German mobile providers, which adds an intriguing layer to the anticipation.
While iPhone launch events are typically scheduled for the second week of September, the actual date remains uncertain until we receive an official confirmation from Apple, which usually heightens the excitement among fans and tech enthusiasts alike.
How much is the iPhone 17 expected to cost?
Apple’s newly announced strategy to broaden its network of US-based manufacturing partners appears to provide some level of protection against the significant tariffs imposed during the Trump administration that have already led to price hikes on various products, including Switch consoles, high-end cameras, and Sonos speakers. However, given the unpredictability of President Trump’s trade policies, which can shift frequently, and Apple’s ongoing reliance on supply chains in Asia, the potential for price fluctuations remains a concern. The critical question that arises is whether Apple will absorb any increased costs or choose to transfer them onto consumers.
If prices do rise, Apple might consider packaging this increase with an “upgrade.” According to a recent leak shared by MacRumors from a known insider referred to as “Instant Digital,” the default storage capacity for the iPhone 17 lineup may start at a generous 256GB, doubling the current standard of 128GB. Although this change could accompany a price increase of around $50, Apple could present it as a “better value” proposition. Notably, the company previously doubled the default RAM for its Mac computers from 8GB to 16GB without additional charges in 2024 — a move that occurred prior to the current cycle of Trump tariffs.
When can we expect the announcement of the iPhone 17 series?
Typically, flagship smartphones are unveiled in September each year. While it’s a bit premature to have precise dates, Apple has occasionally provided only a week or two of notice between sending out invites and the actual event. However, historical trends indicate that the iPhone 17 models are likely to debut sometime in September. This year may mark a significant transition, as indications suggest that the introduction of the iPhone 18 lineup in 2026 could involve a split announcement, with a pro-tier reveal in the fall and a standard model announcement in the following spring.
What features and models will the new iPhone 17 lineup showcase?
Recent design leaks indicate that Apple is working on a remarkably thin smartphone, likely named the iPhone 17 Air, which would align with Apple’s designation for its ultralight laptops. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, a reputable source for insider information regarding Apple, reported back in January that the iPhone 17 Air will feature a basic A19 chip and will be equipped with a single camera lens. Additionally, it may incorporate Apple’s latest in-house modem, which debuted in February with the iPhone 16e. More insights concerning this development may emerge before the September reveal, but this is what we know at present.
An investor note from Apple analyst Jeff Pu suggested that the iPhone 17 Air will feature a titanium frame. If this information proves accurate, this lightweight smartphone will be the sole model in the iPhone 17 lineup to utilize titanium; the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max are anticipated to be manufactured from aluminum, a material that is surprisingly lighter than titanium. Other speculations hinted that the Air model might incorporate a mixture of aluminum and titanium, leaving the exact material composition uncertain until the official announcement.
Furthermore, a report from August 4 via MacRumors indicates that the internal battery pack of the iPhone 17 Air is only 2.49mm thick, which is half the thickness of the battery found in the iPhone 17 Pro. This information was published on the Korean-language Naver blog, which showcased the supposed batteries of both the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro side by side. The same source claims that the battery capacity for the iPhone 17 Air is a modest 2,800 mAh, as noted by MacRumors. This capacity is lower than that of the current iPhone 16 models.
Every new smartphone generation typically includes a base model; however, Apple has diversified its offerings over the years. It is highly likely that the lineup will include an iPhone 17 and an iPhone 17 Pro. Apple has also embraced a philosophy that values size, as evidenced by the introduction of an iPhone Pro Max option, which features a larger screen and enhanced battery life; it’s almost certain that the iPhone 17 series will include a similar offering.
The new Pro iPhones are rumored to feature a full-width “camera island” on the back, marking a significant design shift for Apple. This feature was supposedly observed in a purported iPhone 17 model spotted in real-world situations. Images, highlighted by MacRumors, display a black-cased iPhone 17 Pro with this distinctive back panel. Whether these images are authentic remains uncertain, especially in an era where social media is rife with AI-generated fakes, but the buzz around them adds to the intrigue.
The iPhone 17 Air seems poised to replace what would have been the iPhone 17 Plus. Given that the iPhone 16e was recently launched in February at an unexpectedly high price, it appears unlikely that a new model will be introduced at the lower end of the market, previously known as the SE series.
At the very least, indications suggest that the iPhone 17 Air will retain a charging port rather than relying solely on wireless connectivity. Bloomberg reported that although Apple had considered creating the iPhone 17 Air without any ports, the company ultimately decided against this direction. The upcoming phone is also expected to feature a 6.6-inch display, alongside the Dynamic Island and a dedicated camera control button. The anticipated price is rumored to be around $900 — likely higher than the standard iPhone 17 but less than the Pro models.
We’ve also received credible insights regarding the color options for the upcoming smartphones. Macworld has reported that the iPhone 17 will be available in a range of colors including black, white, steel gray, green, purple, and light blue. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to offer four more muted color choices: black, white, light blue, and light gold. In contrast, the Pro models are rumored to feature bolder color options such as black, white, gray, dark blue, and orange, enhancing the visual appeal.
On July 30, Tom’s Guide highlighted a post from Sonny Dickson, a long-standing and generally reliable source for leaked iPhone information, showcasing “dummy” models of the iPhone 17 in the new color palette mentioned in the Macworld article. While these are merely mock-ups rather than genuine leaked devices, it’s fascinating to observe how the design and color rumors translate into tangible representations.
What features can we expect from iOS 26?
Apple revamped its numbering conventions during WWDC 2025, now aligning the name of each new operating system with the year of its release. Thus, when these new iPhones are launched, they will be operating on iOS 26.
In terms of design, the smartphone operating system introduced during the major developer showcase adopted a controversial approach known as Liquid Glass. Apple has been gradually reducing the extent of transparency effects in subsequent beta versions of iOS 26, while still retaining a glass-like aesthetic that is visually appealing.
The feature set includes both significant and minor updates. On the more substantial side, the Phone and Photos applications have undergone redesigns. Several new features powered by artificial intelligence are also on the horizon, including live translation capabilities in Phone, FaceTime, and Messages. Apple is also developing a sensitive content warning for child accounts that will pause FaceTime video if nudity is detected through on-device machine learning algorithms. Furthermore, the company is launching a feature called Visual Intelligence, which will utilize AI to identify elements within images.
In addition to the major updates, iOS 26 will include numerous minor quality-of-life enhancements. Group texts will now support polls, and for those who struggle with mornings, iOS 26 will finally allow you to bypass the dreaded nine-minute snooze alarm, providing a more user-friendly experience.
The upcoming iOS version is already available as a public beta. Here are our initial thoughts on the Liquid Glass design and the range of new features. Notably, iOS 26 is compatible with all models starting from the iPhone 11.
