Apple’s New Phones: Release Dates, Colors, and Key Details

Spread the love

With the exciting developments surrounding iOS 26, anticipation is building for Apple’s latest smartphone series: the iPhone 17 lineup. Although the official launch is still over a month away—assuming Apple adheres to its customary release timeline—we’re not entirely in the dark about the upcoming models. As is typical with unreleased iPhone variations, a steady stream of rumors and leaks has emerged regarding the hardware features ahead of the official unveiling. Here’s a detailed overview of what we can expect and what insights we can reasonably gather from Apple’s Cupertino headquarters come September.

It’s crucial to understand that not every iPhone rumor holds the same weight, and many should be approached with skepticism. The most recent information comes from a MacRumors article indicating that the internal battery pack of the new ultra-slim iPhone Air is reportedly just 2.49mm thick—this is half the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro battery. This leak originated from a blog post on the Korean-language Naver, where images displaying the alleged batteries of the iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro were shared side by side. The same source claimed that the iPhone 17 Air would feature a battery capacity of only 2,800 mAh, as noted by MacRumors, which is even lower than the capacity of the current iPhone 16 models.

Historically, Apple has unveiled its flagship smartphones in September. While it’s too early to pinpoint the exact announcement dates, Apple typically provides only a week or two of advance notice for invites before the event takes place. Based on years of precedent, it is reasonable to expect that the iPhone 17 series will debut sometime in September. However, this could be the last time Apple adheres to this schedule, as indications suggest that the announcement for the iPhone 18 collection in 2026 might see a split between a fall introduction for the pro-tier models and a spring release for standard versions.

Design leaks indicate that Apple is developing an ultra-sleek smartphone, likely to be dubbed the iPhone 17 Air, aligning with Apple’s ultralight laptop branding. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a reliable source for Apple news, the iPhone 17 Air will feature a basic A19 chip and is expected to sport a single camera lens. It may also incorporate Apple’s new in-house modem, which was introduced earlier this year with the iPhone 16e. Additional details regarding this development may surface prior to September, but this is the information available at the moment.

An investor note from Apple analyst Jeff Pu suggests that the iPhone 17 Air will utilize a titanium frame. If these reports are accurate, this lightweight smartphone would be the sole model in the iPhone 17 lineup to feature that material; the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max are anticipated to be constructed from aluminum, which is ironically lighter than titanium. Some speculation has also hinted at the possibility of the Air using a combination of aluminum and titanium, so the exact materials used might not be confirmed until the official announcement.

Each new lineup typically includes a base model, but Apple often modifies the range of phones offered. Most likely, we will see an iPhone 17 and an iPhone 17 Pro. Apple has also been steadfast in its philosophy that size matters, consistently releasing an iPhone Pro Max option with a larger display and enhanced battery life; the iPhone 17 series will almost certainly continue this trend.

The upcoming Pro iPhones are rumored to feature a full-width “camera island” on the rear, a first for any Apple model that adopts this design. This distinctive feature is reported to have been observed in the purported iPhone 17 “spotted in the wild.” The images, which were highlighted by MacRumors, depict a black-cased iPhone (presumably the 17 Pro) showcasing the unique back panel. Whether this is the genuine article remains uncertain, as the dual angles lend some credibility in an era rife with AI-enhanced fakes, but the truth remains elusive.

The iPhone 17 Air appears poised to replace the potential iPhone 17 Plus. Given that the iPhone 16e was released only recently in February at a surprisingly high price, it seems unlikely that a new addition to that lower end of the smartphone spectrum—previously labeled as the SE models—will emerge.

At the very least, it seems that the iPhone 17 Air will retain a charging port, rather than relying solely on wireless connectivity. Reports from Bloomberg indicate that while Apple considered launching the iPhone 17 Air without any ports, they thankfully opted for a different approach. Additionally, it is expected to feature a 6.6-inch display and include both the Dynamic Island and a Camera Control button. The anticipated price tag is rumored to be around $900—likely higher than the standard iPhone 17 but lower than the Pro models.

We’ve also gained insight into the potential color lineup for these new smartphones. Macworld reported that the iPhone 17 will come in various colors including black, white, steel gray, green, purple, and light blue. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be available in four color options: black, white, light blue, and light gold. While the colors for the Air will likely be softer, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to adopt bolder hues, with options including black, white, gray, dark blue, and orange.

On July 30, Tom’s Guide spotlighted a post from Sonny Dickson—a well-known and generally reliable leaker of unreleased iPhone information—showing “dummy” models of the iPhone 17 in the new color options mentioned in the Macworld report. Although these are merely mock-ups, they provide an intriguing glimpse into how the design and color speculations could manifest in real-world appearances.

Apple made a significant shift in its naming conventions during WWDC 2025, opting to align each new operating system’s name with the year of its release. Thus, when the next generation of iPhones launches, they will operate on iOS 26.

The design aspect of the smartphone OS introduced at the developers’ conference took a bold approach called Liquid Glass. While Apple has been reducing the amount of transparency effects in the subsequent beta tests of iOS 26, the visual aesthetic will still retain a glass-like appearance.

The feature set boasts both major and minor updates. On the more substantial side, the Phone and Photos applications have undergone significant redesigns. Several features leveraging artificial intelligence are also in the works, such as live translation capabilities in the Phone, FaceTime, and Messages apps. Additionally, Apple is testing a sensitive content warning for child accounts, which will freeze FaceTime video if nudity is detected by on-device machine learning algorithms. The company is also rolling out Visual Intelligence, a feature that will utilize AI to search for specific elements within images.

iOS 26 also includes numerous minor enhancements aimed at improving the user experience. Group texts will gain support for polls, adding a new layer of functionality. For those who struggle with waking up, iOS 26 will finally allow users to escape the confines of the nine-minute snooze alarm, providing a welcome change.

The upcoming operating system is currently available as a public beta. Here are our initial impressions regarding the Liquid Glass design and the various new features. iOS 26 will be compatible with all models from the iPhone 11 and newer.
