Tesla executive fired by Elon Musk amid declining sales

In a significant leadership change at Tesla, Elon Musk has reportedly dismissed Omead Afshar, who was serving as the head of manufacturing and operations in North America and Europe. This news has been confirmed by prominent outlets such as Forbes, CNBC, and Bloomberg. Afshar’s departure comes on the heels of another key exit: Milan Kovac, the head of engineering for Tesla’s ambitious Optimus robot, who left the organization in early June. This trend raises questions about the stability of Tesla’s leadership as it navigates challenging market conditions.

Afshar, who was elevated to his position last year, according to Bloomberg, had been part of several Musk-owned companies since 2017. His departure is particularly noteworthy given the current struggles Tesla is facing in the automotive market. Sales figures in Europe have plummeted for five consecutive months, with the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association reporting a staggering nearly 41 percent drop in new Tesla registrations in May alone. Furthermore, Tesla’s performance in China is also concerning, as sales saw a decline of 15 percent during the same month.

While Musk seems to be placing responsibility for these sales challenges on Afshar, the underlying issues appear to stem from Musk’s actions and public persona. His controversial support for former President Donald Trump during the election campaign, coupled with the disruptive DOGE cost-cutting measures initiated post-election, have negatively impacted the public perception of Musk and his companies. Although SpaceX continues to thrive with support from government contracts, Tesla’s sales remain susceptible to consumer sentiment, which the Tesla Takedown movement has been effectively exploiting through protests at Tesla dealerships.

The firing of Afshar, along with Musk’s decision to step down from his governmental role and the launch of Tesla’s robotaxi service in Austin, reflects a series of strategies aimed at altering the public narrative surrounding the company. However, it remains uncertain whether these measures will have a positive impact on Tesla’s sales and overall market standing.
