Members of the ZeniMax Workers United-CWA union have successfully ratified a significant contract agreement with their parent company, Microsoft. This landmark agreement marks a historic moment as it is the first time that Microsoft has engaged in a union contract within the United States. The ZeniMax Studios, widely recognized for its acclaimed work on The Elder Scrolls Online, has taken a crucial step in advocating for its employees. Initial reports on this groundbreaking agreement were made by Stephen Totilo; we have reached out to both Microsoft and the Communications Workers of America for further insights and comments regarding this development.
Like many successful organizing efforts, this achievement has been a long time in the making. The dedicated group of employees began their journey to unionize in 2023, and following the announcement of the voting results, Microsoft promptly recognized the ZeniMax Workers United-CWA. Furthermore, Microsoft has publicly committed to a policy of neutrality toward union organizing at ZeniMax in 2024. The quality assurance (QA) workers from both ZeniMax and Microsoft reached a pivotal agreement earlier this May, emphasizing the importance of employee representation.
The newly ratified contract encompasses essential provisions such as wage increases and established minimum salaries, alongside industry-specific content that includes a refined crediting policy to acknowledge the vital contributions of QA employees. Additionally, the contract features protections for employees concerning the use of artificial intelligence (AI), ensuring that their rights and roles are safeguarded in the evolving landscape of the gaming industry.
