Technical Issue Deletes Some Users’ Maps Timeline Data, Google Reports

After several weeks of complaints from Google Maps users regarding the unexpected deletion of their Timelines, it has been confirmed by Google that some users’ data was indeed lost and, in many instances, is not recoverable. As reported by 9to5Google, Google spokesperson Genevieve Park issued a statement acknowledging a temporary technical malfunction that led to the deletion of Timeline data for a segment of users. This unfortunate situation has left many individuals without access to their historical location data, which is often cherished for its personal significance.

To mitigate future data loss, users should be aware that Google provides options for backing up their data, although these backups are not automatically enabled by default. To activate backups, users need to navigate to Your Timeline within the Maps app and adjust the settings via the cloud icon. The recent incident has resulted in some users losing years of valuable location history. While some individuals who had previously enabled backups reported successful restoration of their Timeline data, others have shared their frustrations on various platforms, indicating that they were unable to fully recover their lost information even after attempting to import their backups.
