Recent findings by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi reveal that Meta’s alternative to Twitter, Threads, is in the process of rolling out an innovative update. This new feature aims to simplify the way Threads users can follow all the profiles they currently engage with on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The proposed update introduces a new option labeled “Creators from X” within the following tools on Threads. This feature is designed to guide users through the necessary steps to download their follower information from X and subsequently upload that data to Threads, making the transition smoother and more user-friendly.
However, there are several important considerations that could affect the effectiveness of this new feature.
Firstly, the process is not automated. Users will need to manually download their follower information from X and upload it to Threads, which may be perceived as a cumbersome task. Historically, many users tend to shy away from engaging in processes that require additional effort, as they often prefer a seamless experience that allows them to dive right into content without unnecessary delays.
Moreover, the accuracy of this data transfer is not guaranteed. Threads will attempt to match the follower data from X with its own records, but discrepancies may arise. There’s a possibility that some profiles followed on X might not have corresponding accounts on Threads, leading to frustration and uncertainty for users who expect a smooth transition.
Consequently, this method may not hold the same value as an ideal one-click follow process, which would significantly enhance user experience. Despite these challenges, making it slightly easier for users to migrate their social circles from X to Threads might encourage more users to make the switch, thus allowing Threads to capitalize on any potential exodus of users from X.
Interestingly, there is currently no strong evidence indicating that users are leaving X in significant numbers.
Despite various reports suggesting a wave of users transitioning away from X over the last year, the platform claims to be maintaining a steady 250 million daily active users. This number has remained unchanged since Elon Musk took over the management of the platform in late 2022.
This indicates that while there may be vocal dissent against Elon Musk due to his increasing political involvement, the platform itself does not appear to be hemorrhaging its user base. However, the ongoing backlash could potentially trigger a new wave of migrations away from the app, prompting Meta to strategically prepare for this with their upcoming update.
Overall, the true value of this new feature remains uncertain, and it is questionable how many users will actually utilize it instead of opting for a more traditional approach of manually searching and connecting with accounts within the app.
Nevertheless, this could serve as another avenue to facilitate the transition from X to Threads.
This may ultimately assist Threads in sustaining its growth trajectory in a competitive social media landscape.
