About a month ago, I received an intriguing email inviting me to allow a stranger to scan my feet, sent by a startup called Groov. This innovative company offers an iPhone-exclusive app that utilizes the phone’s FaceID camera and TrueDepth sensor to accurately map the unique contours of your feet. Following the scan, Groov delivers a pair of bespoke insoles designed to provide enhanced arch support, significantly improving the comfort of your favorite footwear. This approach promises a personalized solution to foot comfort that many shoe lovers may find appealing.
Naturally, I was eager to participate. Groov’s founder, Dan Cataldi, visited the Gizmodo office to demonstrate the app and showcase the custom insoles. He strongly believes that there should be no need for individuals to consult a clinician just to alleviate discomfort from ill-fitting shoes, a notion I wholeheartedly agree with. Cataldi has struggled with flat feet since his high school wrestling days, and he designed the app specifically for those in need of serious arch support that is often lacking in over-the-counter insoles. Although the price tag is higher than typical drugstore options—around $150 for two inserts—Groov promises swift one-week shipping to ensure your comfort is prioritized.
In addition to potentially saving individuals a costly visit to a pedorthist, Cataldi emphasized that the app is crafted to be faster and more user-friendly than traditional custom insole solutions. Many insole manufacturers require you to step on a pad or device to create a foot imprint, which you then send off for custom design. Cataldi pointed out that when you step on a surface, your arch naturally compresses, leading to less accurate measurements. To achieve a superior fit, it’s crucial to capture your foot’s shape with it suspended in the air, something Groov’s technology facilitates seamlessly.
While there have been previous attempts by companies like Dr. Scholl’s to create app-based custom insoles, what distinguishes Groov is its incorporation of a custom machine learning algorithm. Cataldi explained that the AI model is trained using data from hundreds of different feet. By analyzing this data, the app can tailor the insole to the specific dimensions of each user’s foot and shoe. Groov’s app generates a detailed 3D model of each foot, while the company assures users that their data remains anonymized—your feet won’t become the latest curiosity on platforms like wikiFeet.
I have a complicated relationship with shoes, stemming from a childhood spent running barefoot in my backyard. My feet tend to be slightly wide, often resulting in either painfully narrow sneakers that cause blisters or shoes that are overly large, leaving my toes far from the tip. My latest footwear experience involved a pair of leather boots that caused so much discomfort that I had to resort to buying a cheap pair of gel inserts for additional cushioning.
The Groov app is exclusively available on iPhone, but Cataldi mentioned that the team is working on an Android version, which poses challenges due to varying phone models and their compatibility with depth sensors. Upon signing in, users are prompted to provide essential information such as sex, shoe size, and whether they typically prefer narrow or wide fittings. Additionally, you can specify any discomfort you experience in particular areas of your feet, allowing for a more personalized experience.
Experience Unmatched Comfort: What It’s Like to Wear Groov Insoles
To successfully scan your foot, it’s advisable to have a friend or trusted companion assist you, as the process requires getting quite close to your feet. You won’t just scan the soles; you’ll also capture the sides and tops of your feet. The primary scan involves positioning the phone on the ground while holding your foot above the selfie camera to obtain a clear image. The additional scans are easier to manage, but if you’re alone, you may need to channel your inner Twister skills to contort yourself just enough to capture the sides of your feet.
Users can choose between a default model called “Plush” or another elastic variant known as “Response.” The “Luxe” insole is specifically designed for shoes that lack removable linings and features a faux-leather veneer to keep it discreet. For my review, Groov provided both the regular Plush and the Luxe insoles for my previously uncomfortable leather boots. Although those boots were broken in, I still relied on the old gel inserts for added comfort while navigating the city.
It took just over a week for Groov to deliver my insoles to the office. I placed the Plush insoles in my everyday shoes for city walking and gym workouts, and I immediately noticed a significant difference. The enhanced arch support was something I had never fully experienced, even with various other insoles. They fit my gym shoes perfectly, providing a snug, form-fitting feel. As someone who does fencing twice a week, I was initially concerned that the memory foam layer might wear down from the constant movement and impact; however, they proved durable, leaving my feet feeling comfortable even after hours of intense activity.
After wearing the insoles for several weeks, I noticed the Groov logo fading on the right insole. The Luxe insoles in my boots felt much stiffer, providing robust arch support that sometimes pressed uncomfortably into my foot while standing still. However, I found them significantly more comfortable than the gel inserts I had previously relied on for heel protection. My awareness of arch support has been heightened like never before since I started using Groov’s insoles.
Cost is another important consideration, and this is where many prospective customers might hesitate. The standard Groov insoles retail for around $150, though Cataldi indicated plans to enhance pricing transparency on both the app and website, along with potential bundle deals in the future. I’ve experimented with another pair of $50, versatile insoles from Superfeet, designed for workouts and hiking, but they didn’t offer nearly the same level of arch support as Groov’s product. While I can’t definitively say that other brands lack comparable support, what makes Groov unique is its tailored customization for the shoes you already own, ensuring an optimal fit.
Although Groov’s insoles might not boast flashy features like temperature-regulating technology, the most crucial factor remains comfort. For anyone dealing with persistent foot pain, investing in these custom inserts could be a worthwhile decision that enhances your overall comfort and well-being.
