Snapchat is revolutionizing the way AR creators can monetize their innovative designs with a new initiative. Moreover, the platform is making strides to engage students in the fascinating world of augmented reality by introducing a revised pricing model for its AR Spectacles.
To kick things off, Snapchat is launching an exciting new funding initiative dubbed “Challenge Tags.” This program will reward AR developers with cash prizes based on the creativity, technical prowess, and thematic relevance of their submissions, thereby motivating creators to elevate their craft.
This new Challenge initiative not only incentivizes creativity but also serves as a guiding mechanism for AR creators. Snapchat can direct developers towards creating specific types of Lenses that align with trending engagement metrics. This proactive approach helps maintain a steady influx of fresh and engaging experiences within the app, keeping users captivated.
According to a statement from Snap:
“AR developers can register for each challenge, create a Lens using our AR authoring tool Lens Studio, and apply the Challenge Tag during the Lens publishing process. New challenges will be unveiled each month, providing a chance to win a share of the total prize pool.”
The initial Challenge Tag initiative boasts a prize pool of $10,000, where top positions will receive $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 for first, second, and third places, respectively. Additionally, twenty honorable mentions will also receive $250 each, incentivizing a broader range of participants to showcase their creativity.
This initiative presents an excellent opportunity for AR creators to explore new avenues for monetization, keeping them actively engaged with the Snapchat platform. Earlier in 2023, Snap had already launched the Lens Creator Rewards program, which similarly offered cash prizes to encourage participation from AR creators. However, it remains uncertain whether this new Challenge initiative will entirely replace the previous rewards program.
Update: Snap has confirmed that Challenge Tags is designed to complement the Lens Creator Rewards Program, thus providing an additional avenue for developers to earn from their creations.
In another significant development, Snap is keen on fostering interest among students in the field of AR creation by unveiling student pricing for its AR Spectacles.

“Since introducing Spectacles, we’ve seen tremendous interest from students, educators, and staff at educational institutions around the globe. To make the Spectacles accessible to this demographic, we’re rolling out special educational pricing along with a student discount for a subscription fee of $49.50 or €55 per month.”
Snap’s fully AR-capable Spectacles have been available to selected developers since September of last year. Approved partners have been granted early access to the device for an annual leasing fee. Developers have been leasing the glasses for $1,188 per year, and this new program offers a significantly discounted alternative, allowing students to experience the cutting-edge AR technology.

This initiative is poised to enhance the development of engaging AR experiences among students. However, the challenge remains for Snap to effectively compete with tech giants like Apple and Meta, both of which have released their own AR glasses to consumers and developers.
Both Apple and Meta provide substantial opportunities regarding field of view and functionality, which can pose a challenge for Snap as it looks to expand its presence in the AR landscape.
Despite these challenges, Snap continues to lead the charge in delivering captivating AR experiences. By leasing Spectacles to a broader audience of developers and students, the company aims to solidify its position as a key player in the AR market.
In the long run, this initiative could elevate Spectacles into a highly sought-after consumer product. Alternatively, one could speculate that Snap might pivot towards developing AR solutions for competitors like Apple and Meta, which could also serve to enhance its long-term capabilities in building AR experiences.
Snap has announced that the Spectacles educational pricing and student discounts are now available in all regions where the Spectacles can be purchased, including the United States, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands.
“Any student or educator affiliated with an accredited educational institution in these regions qualifies for this offer. Apply to the Spectacles Developer Program using your .edu or institutional email address, and begin your journey in AR creation.”
