In a recent video shared on Threads, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, characterized Edits as a “comprehensive suite of creative tools” and provided a sneak peek into its anticipated functionalities. This announcement suggests that Edits is designed to cater to the diverse needs of content creators, enabling them to harness their creativity and produce exceptional video content.

Mosseri elaborated on the app’s features, stating that it will include a dedicated tab for creative inspiration, a section to organize preliminary ideas, and a significantly improved camera for high-quality video recording. The app will also feature a myriad of editing tools, the ability to share drafts with friends and fellow creators, and valuable insights on video performance for those who choose to share their content on Instagram.

While the official page for Edits on the iOS App Store indicates a launch date of March 13, Mosseri mentioned that users can anticipate its arrival in February. Pre-orders are currently available in the iOS App Store, with an Android version expected to follow soon. However, he urged users to be patient, as the initial version of the app will not include all planned features.

According to the iOS App Store listing, Edits will allow users to create videos lasting up to 10 minutes, with adjustable settings for resolution and framerate. Editing capabilities will encompass generated captions, video filters, voice effects, and audio enhancements to eliminate background noise. Additionally, users will have the ability to animate images using AI technology and access a live insights dashboard to monitor the performance of their Instagram reels.

The timing of Mosseri’s announcement has not gone unnoticed, as Edits appears to be positioning itself as a competitor to ByteDance’s widely-used video editing app, CapCut. Recently, CapCut was removed from U.S. app stores due to the federal ban on applications controlled by “foreign adversaries,” which primarily targeted TikTok but also affected other apps like Marvel Snap.

Although Mosseri did not explicitly mention TikTok or CapCut during his announcement, he did hint at the ongoing situation, remarking that “there’s a lot going on in the world right now.” He emphasized that Edits is intended for creators who produce videos not only for Instagram but also for various other platforms, thereby expanding its usability and appeal.

Even in the absence of the ban, the features of Edits may attract creators. While CapCut offers similar functionalities like generated captions and noise reduction, these previously free features now require a paid subscription, thus making Edits an appealing alternative for budget-conscious creators.

In response to the inevitable comparisons with CapCut, Mosseri expressed confidence that Edits will ultimately stand apart, asserting that it will offer a broader array of creative tools and likely cater to a more niche audience. He described Edits as “a space to track all your ideas instead of relying on templates,” emphasizing the unique focus on AI-driven video editing tools that cater to individual clips or entire videos. Additionally, he highlighted the new insights feature that will help users understand the factors contributing to their video success or challenges.
